School of Business Affairs - October -2017

publisher’s message 6 OCTOBER 2017 | SCHOOL BUSINESS AFFAIRS asbointl.org LEADING FORWARD Each year, School Business Affairs selects one issue to devote to lead- ership. In addition to presenting articles that address the many aspects of leadership within school business, we also like to highlight an ASBO International member who exemplifies leadership in the profession. At ASBO HQ we like to brag about our members. They are among the hardest working, most committed people in their school districts and in their profession. Often their work is done behind the scenes, and we believe they deserve to be recognized. On this month’s SBA cover, we are excited to put the spotlight on James R. Westrum, CPA, CSRM, RSBA, SFO. A Certified Administrator of School Finance and Oper- ations, Certified Public Accountant, Certified School Risk Manager, and Registered School Business Administrator, Jim has been an active ASBO International member since 1994. He’s attended more than 15 ASBO Annual Meet- ing & Expos, several Executive Leadership Forms, as well as the prestigious Eagle Institute. You may very well have seen Jim on the stage at ASBO International’s 2014 Annual Meeting & Expo in Kissim- mee, Florida, when he received the Distinguished Eagle Award in recognition of his accomplishments throughout his career. Perhaps you know Jim as a regular presenter at the Annual Meeting or author of SBA articles on risk management and building trust within the community. Maybe you’ve served on an ASBO committee with Jim. Perhaps you know Jim from Minnesota ASBO or from Wayzata, Minnesota—the school district that is fortunate not only to have Jim as their executive director of finance and business, but also as an alumnus. Jim and his wife Jean have a grown son, Matt, with whom they spend time paddling on the lakes of Min- nesota, downhill skiing in the Rocky Mountains, and sightseeing while attending ASBO Annual Meetings (both Jean and Matt have accompanied Jim over the past two decades). You might also catch a glimpse of Jim and Jean on the dance floor. Accomplished dancers, they danced a Tango and Viennese Waltz in Venice when they cel- ebrated their 30-year wedding anniversary recently. At ASBO HQ in Reston, Virginia, we know Jim as a high-energy, hard-working, dedicated school business official who is committed to his colleagues and to opera- tional excellence. We are honored to have the opportu- nity to spotlight such an outstanding leader. — Siobhán McMahon Colophon: During production of this issue, Siobhán travelled to Yorkshire with her two girls and spent a weekend in Northumber- land with her mum, dad, and family, Pat ran an Apple Butter 10K (yes, apple butter at the end!), and Laura watered her plants and trees while dreaming of autumn.
